Amsterdam - a city that has something for everyone

Amsterdam - a city that has something for everyone

Golden-age grandeur meets cutting-edge brilliance in Amsterdam, a city that has something for everyone. Whether you’re keen to explore its picturesque waterways or delve into its rich history, the Dutch capital certainly delivers. And with easyJet and KLM flying direct from Glasgow Airport to Amsterdam, you’re less than two hours away from enjoying leisure bike rides and fresh stroopwafels.

Shop till you drop

Amsterdam is a haven for shopaholics. If you’re looking for the ideal quirky gift, head to Haarlemmerstraat in the Jordaan district. This serpentine, cobblestoned street is home to a selection of shops that boast everything from Fairtrade chocolate, luxurious olive oil to vintage clothing. For those who love a bargain, hop on the free 906 ferry from Amsterdam Central Station to the IJ-Hallen in Amsterdam North. There you’ll find the city’s biggest flea market where there are more than 750 stands for you to explore.

Perfect for culture vultures

With 75 museums to choose from, Amsterdam is a cultural goldmine. The Rijksmuseum (Museumstraat 1), Van Gogh Museum (Museumplein 6), and Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 263-267) are popular choices. Alternatively, go off the tourist grid and visit the Museum Vrolik (Meibergdreef 15). This tiny museum is filled to the brim with biological curiosities such as unusual skeletons and abnormal foetuses – it is certainly not for the faint-hearted, though.

Life’s a beach

Even in Amsterdam, you can enjoy the feel of soft golden sand beneath your feet. Blijburg aan Zee is a popular urban beach and a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Lounge on the beach with a cold beer or take a dip in the water. The island also hosts several dance parties at night and a yoga session on Saturday mornings. Tram 26 from Central Station takes you straight there.
