Airport staff to join thousands at Glasgow's Sleep in the Park event

Glasgow Airport staff will take part in the Sleep in the Park event this weekend.

The team of 16 Glasgow Airport Ltd employees will join thousands of people across the country at one of four planned events staged to help tackle homelessness in Scotland.

More than 12,000 people are expected to participate in sleep out events in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee tomorrow evening. Colleagues from our sister airport in Aberdeen will also take part in the event staged in the city’s Duthie Park.

Derek Provan, CEO of AGS Airports Ltd, which owns Glasgow and Aberdeen airports, will join his colleagues at the sleep out event in Kelvingrove Park.

He said: “Since returning to the group this year and spending more time in Aberdeen and Glasgow city centres, I am always personally challenged by the sight of people living rough on our city streets.

“In 2018, and in this country, it shouldn’t be an issue we have to address, but it is.  Last year’s inaugural Sleep in the Park event in Edinburgh not only raised an outstanding £4 million to help support a number of very worthy projects, it also sent out a very powerful message calling for an end to homelessness in Scotland.

“My colleagues and I wanted to show our support for homeless people across the country. Granted it is only a small gesture, but one that will raised much-need funds and also help us to better understand the hardships those less fortunate than ourselves experience day in, day out.”

So far the Glasgow team has raised almost £4000 through raffles, home-baking and office tuck shops as well as sponsorship and donations from colleagues and passengers.
