What is COP26?
COP26 is the 2021 United Nations climate change conference. World leaders arrived in Scotland, alongside tens of thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses and citizens for twelve days of talks with the aim of reaching an agreement on how to tackle climate change.

What does COP stand for?
COP is an abbreviation for 'Conference of the Parties'. This year was the 26th annual summit – giving it the name COP26.

What were the goals of COP26?
International climate summits are complex. There were 4 main goals of COP26.
1. Secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach
2. Adapt to protect communities and natural habitats
3. Mobilise finance
4. Work together to deliver

Why was COP26 important?
In the foreword of the COP26 Explained PDF, COP President Alok Sharma, says:
'As countries begin to recover from the Coronavirus pandemic, we must take the historic opportunity to tackle climate change at the same time – to build back better, and greener.'

Why was the COP26 conference in Glasgow?
Glasgow was chosen by the UK to host COP26 due to its experience in hosting world-class events, commitment to sustainability and first-rate facilities.
Recently awarded the status of Global Green City, we have an ambitious target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
The city is also currently ranked 4th in the world in the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index) that promotes responsible business tourism best practice.

Why was COP26 delayed?
In light of the worldwide effects of COVID-19, the COP Bureau of the UNFCCC had decided to re-schedule the conference initially slated for November 2020. This allowed more time for the necessary preparations to take place and ensures that all parties can focus on the issues to be discussed at this vital conference.

What were the COP26 dates?
COP26 was a 12-day climate convention that took place from the 31st October -12th of November 2021.
