Airlines add extra capacity from Glasgow
- Glasgow Airport secures hundreds of extra flights
- Thomas Cook, Thomson and Virgin Atlantic announce increase in capacity
- Special rescue fares announced by easyJet and Flybe
Glasgow Airport has already secured additional capacity from three of the UK's biggest airlines, following the demise of Scottish airline flyglobespan.
The move will allow many holidaymakers affected by the collapse of the company to rebook alternative flights with other airlines based at Glasgow Airport.
All but one of the 12 destinations served from Glasgow by flyglobespan are already well served by other major carriers such as Thomas Cook, Thomson, Virgin Atlantic and easyJet.
Glasgow Airport managers have been working through the night to backfill the gap left by flyglobespan.
Thomas Cook has already announced extra winter flights to Tenerife and Alicante. From summer 2010, the airline will serve Palma, Dalaman, Alicante, Paphos, Faro, Antalya, Tenerife and Arrecife from Glasgow.
Thomson Holidays and First Choice have announced an extra 250 flights this winter and next summer from Glasgow, serving Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, Algarve, Majorca, Tenerife, Turkey, Cyprus and Florida. In total, the airline will add an extra 7,000 seats this winter, and 38,000 next summer, from Glasgow.
Virgin Atlantic, which operates a 450-seat Boeing 747 from Glasgow to Orlando International during the summer months, has also confirmed an extra seven flights to Florida, adding up to 3000 extra seats during June and July.
Meanwhile, Olympic Holidays has also increased the number of summer 2010 holidays available from Glasgow. Destinations include Corfu, Crete, Rhodes and Dalaman.
Discussions with other airlines are continuing and airport managers are confident that further new capacity will be added.
Amanda McMillan, MD of Glasgow Airport, said: "Our first priority is to ensure that passengers are given the information they need to allow them to arrange alternative flights, or make their way home from holiday, following the sad demise of flyglobespan.
"We are also actively working with our airline partners to provide additional capacity on many of the destinations served by flyglobespan. We are making good progress, with three of the UK's biggest airlines already confirming a massive increase in capacity from Glasgow this winter and next summer. This will allow many holidaymakers affected by the demise of flyglobespan to make alternative travel arrangements."
She added: "The majority of flyglobespan's routes were popular sunspot destinations that are already served by other well established carriers. With several already confirming thousands of extra seats, we are continuing to talk to other airlines about providing a further increase in capacity and we are extremely confident that we can meet the strong demand for these routes. Holidaymakers intending to travel to these destinations will continue to be well served from Glasgow."
Meanwhile, easyJet and Flybe have announced special rescue packages for passengers stranded on holiday overseas. EasyJet will fly holidaymakers in Malaga, Alicante and Faro to Glasgow for £60, while Flybe will return passengers stranded in Malaga and Alicante to Glasgow for a one-off fare of £59.99.
