Johannesburg

Fast-paced, frenetic and full of surprises, South Africa’s biggest city is an exciting place to visit. Combine shopping and sightseeing with a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience on a holiday to Johannesburg from Glasgow Airport.

Retail therapy

Browsing the bric-a-brac stalls and fresh food stands at Jo’burg’s stellar selection of street markets is one of the best ways to soak up the city’s unique vibe. The Neighbourgoods Market (73 Juta Street) is quickly garnering international recognition for its scrumptious brunches and artsy vibe, while the daily African Craft Market on Cradock Avenue is the perfect place to pick up a souvenir. If it’s luxury labels you’re after, then the boutiques of Oaklands Drive showcase both local and international designers.

Cultural calendar

As well as national institutions such as the Johannesburg Art Gallery (Joubert Park) and the Civic Theatre Complex (158 Loveday Street), this culturally progressive city is home to a thriving collection of community art workshops. Many, such as the Bag Factory Artists Studio (10 Mahlathini Street), programme regular public exhibitions and run open workshops for art enthusiasts. Other exciting cultural events on the Jo’burg calendar include the Encounter film festival in June and the FNB Dance Umbrella in August/September.

Go wild

If you can drag yourself away from the bright lights of the city, the surrounding area boasts some of the best big game watching in South Africa. Most visitors head to the Kruger National Park, a five-hour drive from central Jo’burg, but Pilanesberg Game Reserve is a closer – and quieter – option. Contained within the bowl of a long-extinct volcano, the reserve is home to all of Africa’s ‘Big Five’ as well as an incredible array of birdlife. The lodges of Kwa Maritane and Bakubung offer luxurious lodgings for wildlife enthusiasts.
