Grenoble

With breathtaking alpine views from every street corner, world-class museums, a vibrant nightlife scene and an excellent transport system, Grenoble is a fantastic year-round holiday destination and now little more than a two-hour flight from Glasgow Airport.

Scale the heights

Nestled at the foot of the French Alps, the city is perfect for an active break. Nearby ski resorts are easily accessible by bus in winter and there are plenty of mountain walking opportunities in summer. The city itself is flat, so cycling everywhere is a breeze (or make use of the ultra-efficient bus and tram system). The truly energetic can make the steep climb to Fort de la Bastille, a 16th-century fortress offering stunning views, but taking one of the spherical cable cars, fondly known as “les bulles” (the bubbles), is far more fun.

A picture-perfect city

Explore some of the best of Western art, from the Renaissance to the present at Musée de Grenoble (5 Place de Lavalette). For cutting-edge contemporary artworks, head to the glass-and-steel Le Magasin (8 Espl. Andry Farcy), set in a former warehouse designed by Gustave Eiffel. More Art Tea (41 Rue Lesdiguières) offers tea with a twist: patrons are encouraged to view the works of art from the vantage point of a comfy armchair.

Enjoy the bohemian life

Grenoble’s status as a university town means there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the city centre. London Pub (11 Rue Brocherie) has a dancefloor and is popular student haunt, while La Soupe aux Choux (7 Route de Lyon) is a jazz institution, albeit with a name that translates to ‘cabbage soup’. The historic Café de la Table Ronde (7 Place Saint-André) is the oldest café in Grenoble and the second-oldest in France. Make sure you try chartreuse, a liqueur made of 130 herbs, plants and flowers and created by Carthusian monks in the nearby Chartreuse Mountains.
