Glasgow Airport was officially crowned Scottish Airport of Year at the 2015 Scottish Transport Awards which were held at the Radisson Blu in Glasgow on Thursday 18 June.

The airport was recognised for having its busiest year since 2008 in 2014, welcoming more than 7.7 million passengers and securing 20 new routes and services, including a daily service to Halifax, Nova Scotia with Canadian airline WestJet, and a new direct service to Las Vegas with Thomas Cook Airlines.

It also completed its £20 million terminal redevelopment programme which included a major refurbishment of the international arrivals area.  Delivering excellent service and facilities for its existing and new customers was also a key achievement.

In 2014 the airport played a major role welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors for the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup, the MTV European Music Awards and a host of other major events over the past 18 months.

The award comes at a time when passenger numbers are continuing to climb at Glasgow Airport and this year will see numbers return to pre-recession levels.  It also follows the launch of a host of new routes throughout May and June, including Budapest, Chania, Prague and Munich.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “To be named Scottish Airport of the Year is a fantastic achievement and it is testament to the dedication and commitment of the team. We have achieved a great deal of success over the course of the past 18 months and we are seeing our passenger numbers grow at an unprecedented rate.  2014 was also a fantastic year in terms of route development, and together with the completion of our £20 million terminal investment programme, we are continuing to encourage more people to fly from Glasgow Airport.”

The Scottish Transport Awards are supported by the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland and recognise excellence, innovation and progress across all areas of transport.
