Glasgow Airport boosts international traffic for January 2012
14 February 2012
A strong demand for overseas travel enabled Glasgow Airport to report an increase in international traffic for January 2012, a month which also saw Emirates Airline confirm it will introduce a second daily non-stop flight from Glasgow to Dubai on 1 June 2012.
Overall passenger figures were down 0.4% compared to the same period last year and this decrease was mainly attributable to the impact of the high winds which caused widespread disruption across Scotland on 3 January. International traffic was boosted by demand for a number of recently added European routes including Madrid, Amsterdam and Stavanger, while KLM, Aer Arann and Emirates all reported growth.
Amanda McMillan, managing director at Glasgow Airport, said: “Emirates’ announcement that it is to double its daily service to Dubai ensured we made the best possible start to 2012 and we were encouraged by the strong performance of other carriers such as easyJet, KLM and Jet2.com. International traffic was the main driver of our growth in 2011 and we are pleased to see this trend continue into 2012.
“We are looking forward to the launch next month of Jet2.com’s direct flights to Barcelona and Rome and despite the challenging economic climate we will continue to work with our airline partners to expand our route network.”
