21 February 2012
easyJet, Scotland’s largest airline, is celebrating flying 20million passengers on routes from Glasgow Airport. The airline has reached the passenger milestone 16 years after its first flight to London Luton Airport.
easyJet’s presence has also been vital to supporting inward investment and tourism into Glasgow and Scotland, bringing 10million passengers into the city since 1996.
Today, easyJet operates 15 routes from Glasgow Airport, and has flown 1.7million passengers in and out of the airport in the past 12 months.
Hugh Aitken, easyJet’s commercial manager for Scotland, said: “Reaching 20million passengers out of Glasgow caps an incredible year for easyJet in Scotland.
“Glasgow is a key hub in the European expansion strategy for easyJet, and reaching this passenger milestone reflects our commitment to providing passengers with a greater choice of destinations, across both the leisure and business travel markets.
“Our routes also bring vital investment into the region, and we will continue to work with the Team Glasgow partnership to support the tourism industry across Glasgow and the rest of Scotland.”
Hugh Aitken added that easyJet has maintained its commitment to the city of Glasgow through increasing capacity and frequency on its routes during the past 12 months.
“This has been demonstrated through the introduction of new routes to Amsterdam and Jersey, as well as increasing frequency on our Glasgow to London Gatwick route,” he said.
“As other airlines have cut routes, we have increased choice for Glasgow passengers.
“And we will continue with this strategy as we meet our objective of making air travel easy and affordable for our growing customer base across both the leisure and business travel markets.”
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “Since its inaugural flight to Luton 16 years ago, easyJet has gone from strength-to-strength and has played an important role in the growth of Glasgow Airport.
“easyJet has worked tirelessly to enhance and tailor its offering and provide business and leisure customers with a first class service. I would like to congratulate the airline on reaching such a significant milestone and wish it continued success at Glasgow Airport.”
Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “easyJet must be commended for its continued commitment to the Glasgow business community since its first flight to Luton Airport 16 years ago.
“In a very tough and challenging economic climate, our members need value and flexibility to remain competitive in the market place.
“easyJet meets this demand and its continued support is invaluable to the Glasgow business community in remaining connected to London and the continent, as well as bringing vital inward investment into Glasgow and the region.”
