Improvements FAQs
When do these changes take effect?
The changes will begin to take effect from Tuesday June 8 2010.
Why are we making these changes?
The system whereby passengers were dropped off and picked up in the multi-storey car park (Car Park 2) was developed as a temporary solution in the aftermath of the 2007 terrorist attack. It was never intended as a long-term solution to the airport’s access needs as it often results in congestion, particularly in the busy summer months, and during the morning peak. Quite simply, it does not provide the level of customer service expected of a major international airport.
Where do I get dropped off when I arrive at the airport?
If you’re arriving by bus, you’ll get dropped off outside the front of the terminal. If you’re arriving by car - including taxis - you’ll be dropped off at the new drop-off zone, to the west of international arrivals and opposite Car Park 1. Passengers arriving by private coach will continue to be dropped off on Bute Road,
which runs parallel with the new drop-off zone.
Will I have to pay to drop someone off?
No. While other regional airports of a similar size charge for both pick-up and drop-off, or are considering it, we have no plans to do so.
Where will I get picked up?
If you’re catching a bus, coach or airport licensed taxi, you won’t notice any change to the pick-up process. If you’re being met by a friend or relative, you should ask them to wait for you in Car Park 1. They can check if your flight is on time using the outdoor flight information screens.
Why are there different zones for pick-up and drop-off?
We think it’s sensible and safe to separate the pick-up and drop-off process. It reduces congestion and gives priority to departing passengers who are more likely to be time pressured. The process of dropping off is instantaneous whereas pick-up often involves vehicles waiting for longer periods of time. This causes congestion on our road network.
Is there a charge if I am picking someone up in Car Park 1?
Yes. It will cost £1 for up to 20 minutes. Outdoor flight information screens will be located nearby.
I have restricted mobility. What does this change mean for me?
Blue badge holders will continue to have access to the ground loor of Car Park 2, directly opposite the terminal. Simply present your ticket to the customer service desk in the car park for up to 30 minutes free access. Drivers will be asked to produce their blue badge before their ticket is validated.
I usually pre-book a private hire taxi to pick me up. Where should I meet my driver?
You really shouldn’t notice a big difference to your experience. Your driver will drop you off at the new drop-off point and will pick you up from Car Park 1 or Car Park 2. There will be a dedicated pick-up facility for both TOA and private hire taxis in Car Park 2.
Will there be a charge for using this facility?
Yes. The minimum cost for TOA and private-hire taxis using either car park is £1, the same as for private motorists.
Will this be added to the cost of my journey?
This is entirely a matter for your taxi company. You should check with them when booking as some companies may have different policies.
How will the changes to Car Park 2 affect me?
We are creating a new entrance to Car Park 2 to improve access from the M8. Again, this is designed to ease congestion. Passengers travelling from the M8 westbound will no longer have to follow
the same route used by vehicles that are dropping off or picking up.
Will I still be able to drop-off or pick-up on St Andrew’s Drive?
No. The St Andrew’s Drive drop-off point, which was developed as a temporary solution following the terrorist attack, is being transformed into a dedicated cycle route as part of a project to improve provision for cyclists around the airport.
How will I find my way around the airport following the change?
We are investing heavily in improved signage to make the journey through the airport more intuitive and the drop-off and pick-up points easy to find. It will also be easier for motorists to find their way to car parks, the M8 and other major roads.
How do operators such as charter bus companies arrange for access?
This should be arranged at least 48 hours in advance through the Glasgow Airport Property Department:
