Passengers dig deep to raise over £8,000 to support the FlightPath Fund

Passengers dig deep to raise over £8,000 to support the FlightPath Fund

Glasgow passengers have raised £8,147 for the airport’s FlightPath Fund so far in 2024.

The fantastic amount was collected prior to the Easter break through the six cash globes positioned across the airport in which passengers can donate any left-over currency.

The sum raised by passengers has been added to this year’s £120,000 FlightPath Fund awards pot total.

The FlightPath Fund supports a diverse range of local groups, charities and organisations across the Glasgow, Renfrewshire, East and West Dunbartonshire local authority areas. So far this year, 32 awards have been made totalling over £32,000.

The Fund’s committee is continuing to urge neighbouring groups and organisations to submit applications and is also keen to support sustainability-themed projects aimed at improving the environment in the communities local to the airport.

The total amount collected from the globes came from dozens of different global currencies including Croatian Kunas, Vietnamese Dong, Turkish Lira, Singaporean Dollars, Latvian Lats, South African Rands, Ukrainian Hryvnia and Israeli New Shekel. Currencies new to the collection globes included Malawian Kwacha, Ethiopian Birr, Macau Patacas and Costa Rica Colons.

The top five currencies collected out with UK Pounds and Euros were:

  • £376 in US Dollars
  • £258 in Polish Zloty
  • £120 in UAE Dirhams
  • £103 in Czech Koruna
  • £94 in Swiss Francs

Aside from the obscure and wonderful currencies of the world, the globes also collected donations in pre-Euro currencies including Irish Punts, Lithuanian and Latvian Litas and German Deutsche Marks.

Archie Hunter, Chair of the FlightPath Fund, said: “Glasgow Airport’s passengers continue to show their generosity and this is very welcome indeed.

“We are extremely grateful for their support and I want to assure them that by donating their unused currency, they are playing a significant role in helping such a diverse range of worthwhile groups, charities and organisations that neighbour the airport.”

The next FlightPath Fund meeting will take place on Friday 21 June and applications must be submitted not later than three weeks prior to this.
